My criteria for choosing them:
- Based on mainly what we use most today and where they came from/what they’re made of/what they use
- All these inventions shape our everyday lives, and are all inventions our society can’t live without
Writing Utensils
- Earliest methods of recording and maintaining information
Electric circuits
- Most of the modern world runs on electricity
Plumbing
- We don’t have odorous, infectious cities (we don’t need to have another Thames River and the Great Stink crisis)
- We can’t live without running water (showers, water for food)
Turing’s Machine
- One of the first computational devices in this level of processing
- Helps us understand the logic behind computers
Man-made satellites
- Helps us get an accurate picture of the place we live in and how the earth and the space around it is.
Google search
- Almost instantaneous information about almost anything
- One of the reasons we’re called the information age
Camera
- Accurate method of recording the present for the future to view as past (for personal memory or for historical analysis)
Mobile Devices
- Convenient and portable method of communication
- Many practical uses such as navigation, fast/emergency calls, etc.
Touch screen
- An important part of modern technology (smart phones, tablets, Windows 8 computers)
- Makes teaching, taking notes, and digital arts convenient.
Glass
- The last 3 slides all showed some usage of glass
- Used in many everyday instances (windows, mirrors, eye glasses, drinking glasses, etc.)
I'll go into more detail about a couple of these in my video:
The camera. That's a really good one, mostly because it's effect has played an integral role in global media and news circulation. Prior to its introduction, it was incredibly difficult to communicate accurately events happening in extrapersonal space - we were limited to hand drawings, sketches, paintings, and other inaccurate means of imaging. Cameras opened up an entirely New means of communicating accurate information, leading to better communication of global movements, international news, etc. Etc.
ReplyDeleteI hadn't considered the camera before as a top ten inventions, but I think I will now. Thanks!
Sorry - I'm going through my comments now and forgot that we had to add a small suggestion. I was thinking that maybe it might be helpful to add your powerpoint slides as visuals, just to make the blog flow a bit better and easier to read. It also may help to use the ppt's diagrams to illustrate thought process.
DeleteHi Grace,
ReplyDeleteI like how everything is brief and bullet-pointed because it's just straight to the point. But to that same token, I offer the suggestion of maybe elaborating more (what writing utensils? context + significance?) just so the reader gets a little better understanding of where your thoughts are instead of a little blueprint!
Hi Grace,
ReplyDeleteI really like how you lay out your criteria for your choices up front. I also like how your posts are concise and fairly easy to read.
I think you can add more to each invention maybe show how the effect of the invention. A lot of your picks are from the 21st century and, based on your criteria, I think there are some picks you could take out, like the camera. I think the camera is valuable but not necessary to our survival as a species where as the invention of early tools like the knife and other hunting tools was critical to our survival as a species.
I really like your blog post! Great job!
Hi Grace,
ReplyDeleteGreat, neat post! I loved that you started off explaining your thought process of choosing these inventions. Also, even though you listed off all your inventions - I like that you are also choosing some of them to talk about in your post. This will give you more time to elaborate on specific inventions in the short 3 minutes given. Since you're not going into all your inventions though, perhaps you could elaborate on them on your actual posts!
Hope you learn lots in this class so the legal process won't be as big of a struggle! :)
Great pick Grace! I love how you put the Turing Machine on there. Have you seen the movie The Imitation Game? It talks about the life of Alan Turing. The Turing Machine for sure changed the way we view computers and how we interact with them today.
ReplyDeleteI think if electric circuits are going to be mentioned, then the wheel should too. It is also fundamental to almost every product we have, and even the ones that don't contain wheels, if they're mass produced than the wheel is probably involved. Satellites are amazing, and the discovery of radio waves allowed for many inventions, satellites being just one of them. Thanks for the ideas!
ReplyDeleteHi Grace,
ReplyDeleteOverall great blog post! I really loved how you laid out your blog post. It was super clear and organized which made it very nice to read. I really like your criteria. I agree that inventions that have allowed us to produce other inventions that are still around today are super important!
I think your choice of the writing utensil is very interesting! I agree that it is the very first tool that allowed humans to record history which is incredibly important and vital to our society. I also really love your choice of the Turing’s machine since it led to so many inventions after its inception!
I really enjoyed reading your blog posts. I think one suggestion would be to elaborate a little more on certain inventions just to get a better understanding. This was great though and gave me a lot of inventions to think about! Thanks!
Hey Grace,
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading your list of the Top Ten inventions. I also included the turing machine in my top ten. I think that it is so crucial to all of the advancements in technology in the modern age.The only thing that I would suggest would be to include a little more elaboration on some of the inventions. Overall, a job well done!
